3 Common Summer Roofing Problems

Many think summer has the nicest weather of the year, but the reality is that it can be a dangerous time of year for your roof. Learn about three of the most common summer roofing problems below.

Curling or Shrinking Shingles

Common culprits of shingle damage are heavy winds or other severe weather. However, the warmer temperatures of summer can be more damaging to your home than you may realize. Extreme heat & direct sunlight will wear away at your shingles over time. Curling or shrunken shingles can allow water to leak into your home, which could cause bigger (and more expensive) problems down the road.

Hidden Leaks

Summer leaks can be particularly damaging because they can hide more easily in the dry season than they can during regular rain. Leaks that go unnoticed can cause serious damage to your home as they can let water into your house that then sits quietly in the dark spaces of your home—creating the perfect conditions for mold and mildew growth.

Moss & Algae Growth

Moss and algae are especially common in rainier climates, but if left unchecked for too long, it can seriously damage or destroy your roof. Moss and algae are relatively simple to remove—just use warm soapy water and a scrub brush to wash off the growth.

Be sure to avoid using a pressure washer or any hose with high pressure on your roof as the force of the water can actually do more damage to your shingles than good. The pressure of the water can force your shingles up and create spaces for more water to creep into your house and create water damage!
